Facebook Venues appears to be Massive Multiplayer Online Web Technology (MMO) allowing large numbers of VR users to jump into a live concert simultaneously (assuming that the concert will be filmed with the new Oculus 360 Volumetric Cameras and streamed with OTOY’s Holographic Media format that I saw at Unite Austin.
The Oculus Go was announced it is an all in one headset, it costs $199 and it runs all Gear VR apps from day one (Binary Compatibility). My question is will it run Google Daydream? It has a single motion controller like the Gear VR and the Daydream. I think I am going to get one when it comes out. I think of it as the Gear VR sequel/replacement. I don’t want my phone to be drained of it’s battery in VR so could be a better option for some people.
Oculus announced a new program called Oculus Business, with a new Business bundle, and they named several examples of companies like Audi using it to do things like installing Rift in hundreds of Audi dealerships worldwide which is a pretty big deal for the VR market and it’s goal to become accepted by the business world.
4. Quill is now integrated into Spaces, and beyond that Medium content can be integrated into Spaces, and beyond that the things you build can be integrated into Facebooks phone based AR which is all aimed in part at integrating AR/VR content into our social media (into Facebook) but the larger story is that it’s about allowing people to be more uniquely creative together in VR. Part of idea is to make collaborate Oculus Home spaces that you can co-create with your friends a feature that will be available later, but for now you can do up your own Home space and invite your friends to visit.
5. The Summer of Rift sale was so hot that Oculus decided to make the $399 price permanent. Dropping it down from $499. This is a big financial risk for FB because it hits close to their costs for making the Rift/Touch bundle. Hopefully sales of software will make up for it, and of course Facebook is big rich company so its a risk they can afford to take for now.
6. Project Santa Cruz was revealed to be a different device from Oculus Go, so there are now four Oculus Rift devices
1. Gear VR, 2. Oculus Go, 3. Project Santa Cruz, and 4. Oculus Rift.
7. Rift Software is getting a BIG update with Rift Core 2.0 It’s all about making the user interface both more powerful, more intuitive, and more personal. With big options for customizability, and an interface called Dash that was built from the ground up for use with Oculus Touch controllers. It pops up inside any and every VR app at a system level allowing you to watch videos, or debug your VR Apps from inside other VR apps including from inside Dash. You are no longer separated from your PC apps when you are using another VR app.
8. Blade Runner the VR app is coming to Oculus Rift, and a whole bunch of other content that lets people be inside their favorite movie. It’s cool!
End of Story.
