Mixed Reality is also known as Augmented Reality. It’s when the real world is being tracked so that computer graphics can be placed on top of the real world so you can have a digital couch in the exact same place as a real couch, or you can turn the real couch into a digital box or a rock, so that you can avoid colliding with that couch while you are in VR.
Andrew Bosworth the VP of AR/VR is using a keyboard with the Oculus Quest but where are the touch controllers? You are also seeing hand & body tracking. See here: https://youtu.be/ZUeNt7qOGos
When you look down at your avatar in Oculus Mixed Reality it also tracks your body. I experienced this first hand my body being tracked inside the Dead & Buried Mixed Reality Demo at OC5.
Quest has four cameras on the front that track the users position in space, and the users hands and body. Quest does all this tracking with a program called Quest Insight that looks for recognizable objects including the floor, walls, and ceiling. It uses cameras so it won’t work in total darkness. It won’t work outdoors mainly because of the lack of walls and ceilings outdoors.

Quest effectively competes with Magic Leap, ODG, Hololens, Meta, and every AR VR including the iPhone ARKit because you will be able to do Oculus Mixed Reality with a keyboard as revealed in the keynote video. Except that it’s only $399, compare that to Magic Leaps price of $2,300. What do you think is going to happen? A New Star Wars Trilogy in VR: Disney’s Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire brings their multiplayer mixed reality story telling to the Oculus Quest. David S. Goyer is the Writer and Executive Producer of Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire. He created an incredible experience with the folks at The Void and now he is bringing the next experience to the Oculus Quest. Based on what I saw at OC5 I believe that we are meant to think of this new three part Star Wars story (a trilogy) as a Multi-Player experience that can accommodate 4–6 players. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VeEDoCkzXc
